The area addressed by the Wales Route Utilisation Strategy is large and embraces some 900 route miles of railway.
The RUS identifies a number of gaps, many of which reflect the desire for more train services. Principally this is in south Wales, where capacity use is at its highest.
There has been continued strong growth in passenger demand, particularly in the Cardiff region. A step-change in capacity will shortly become necessary to cater for growth on the urban network serving the Cardiff Valleys and improvements are recommended to links between north and south Wales.
In addition to informal consultation with a wide group of stakeholders throughout the process, a formal consultation took place between May and August 2008.
